Editorial: Agua Fria barriers about preservation
No one wants Big Brother-like intrusion. No one wants expanded restrictions. And surely no one wants government-ordered "barriers" in our natural environments.

However, is this what we deserve? In a word - yeah.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is doing its best to preserve Yavapai County's 71,000-acre Agua Fria National Monument, which contains more than 400 archaeological sites spanning some 2,000 years of human history.

Column: Immigration's blame game needs revising
Here are some truths. The immigration policy in the U.S. has been ineffective for years, the need for migrant workers has and always will be present, and business is always motivated by profit.

Once upon a time, there was a guest worker program that ran formally between 1942 and 1964. The Mexican Farm Labor Program, informally called the Bracero Program, sponsored 4.5 million border crossings of guest workers from Mexico.

Letter: Lowering taxes is the way to go
With all due respect to Rev. John M. Kohlenberger ("Candidates Out of Touch on Taxes," Aug. 18), I am amazed that liberals who continually espouse raising taxes totally misunderstand basic economics. Allow me to try to educate:

Letter: Separating America's haves from have-nots
There's plenty of indication out there that our nation is in a lot of trouble:

We're $13 billion in debt; of every dollar the government has to spend, 42 cents of it is borrowed; the government gives other nations billions of our dollars as if we were all rich; the government starts wars with Third World nations to the tune of $100 billion a year - so far four of them since World War II, we've yet to win one.

Editorial: 'Good old days' doesn't mean worse days ahead
Reflecting on the old days when the Yavapai County Fairgrounds stood in the heart of Prescott evokes nostalgia for people who were here way back then.

It's fun to remember it as a hub of activity, especially during the summer. Horse race fans filled the Prescott Downs stands, tip sheets in hand, betting on their favorite ponies. The town was small in the old days, so people knew the horse owners, trainers, jockeys, their favorite racehorses and even the "mudders" that could slop through the wet track to the finish line during the regular monsoon storms.

Letter: Community service gets deserved praise
Community service is sometimes forgotten, but not by a gentleman named Stacey Hickman and his company Core 5 Concrete LLC.

Core 5 provided a significant donation to Music Memory 2010, which is sponsored by the Yavapai Symphony Guild. That donation helped make it possible for nearly 4,000 students to learn about and enjoy quality music featuring the Prescott Pops Symphony Orchestra.

Letter: Reader takes issue with columnist
Syndicated columnist Tina Dupuy needs to get her facts straight.

In her article attacking Republicans, "Bring Back Corruption of Blood," she states, "there is no hard data on actual anchor babies." As usual, the media suffers from "selective fact-finding or no fact-finding at all when it comes to attacking an opponent.

Editorial: State, voters suffer along with Brewer
Watching television and video coverage of this past Wednesday's gubernatorial debate was like watching a car accident in slow motion. Republican Gov. Jan Brewer's silence and missteps were painful - no matter which party she represents - and one could not turn away.

Brewer became governor in January 2009 when her Democratic predecessor, Janet Napolitano, resigned midterm. Brewer is running for a full term against Democrat Attorney General Terry Goddard. According to polls and The Associated Press, Brewer is favored to win.

Letter: Ground Zero mosque a lose-lose prospect
I am a naturalized Moslem American, born in Istanbul, Turkey. Nobody can deny Imam Rauf's and his followers' legal right to build a mosque very close to ground zero. The issue is not if the project is legal or not, but if the location is right or wrong - particularly in light of the fact that a mosque already exist in the close vicinity.

Letter: Officer's parents appreciate support
We want to thank reporter Lisa Irish for the excellent article she wrote on the memorial service for our son Brian and for John Schultz and Jose Presas entitled "Officers Honored, Celebrated." Her powers of observation and her skill in quoting those who spoke are remarkable. We'll keep this article as a fine record of your community's and Arizona's goodbye to three detention officers.

Letter: Majority should rule in smoking issue
I direct this letter to the editors because you failed to address the full intent of "The Smoke Free Arizona Act" ARS 36-601.0113 in your July 13 editorial. It would have been to your credit if you had taken an editorial stance instead of being wish-washy.

Editorial: Juvenile system can effect positive change
Naysayers believe that the best thing to do is "lock 'em up and throw away the key.'"

They are talking about the kids who fall on the wrong side of the law. They think these young miscreants are beyond salvaging and not worthy of investing in them so that they can become self-sustaining productive citizens.

Column: Who will pay for Verde flow mitigation?
In our past two Citizens Water Advocacy Group (CWAG) columns, we discussed why there should be a mitigation plan before construction of the proposed Big Chino pipeline. In this one we will discuss the economics of mitigation.

The cost of the pipeline project is currently estimated at $133 million. This estimate, however, doesn't include the costs to mitigate the reduction in Verde River flows that will result.

Letter: Examine actions, motives of candidates
I feel this year's vote will be the most important in my lifetime. Study your candidates and talk to people who have worked with these people. You may find a different picture than they portray on TV and in articles.

The people who have been in office for years have put this country in worse shape than ever.

Letter: Charity objectors may one day need it
In Bob Charlesworth's Aug. 4 letter, he responded to my July 12 letter, which pointed out that he had repeated an inaccurate assessment of the cause of the mortgage meltdown. I did not appreciate the hint that I was partisan-driven. At various times I have spoken out against members of both political parties when I believed they were wrong.

The NAACP released the complete video later, which did show Shirley Sherrod with her complete talk.

Letter: Candidate claims don't follow facts
During the League of Women Voters' debate at Yavapai College Aug. 4, at least two of the Republican LD1 candidates quoted statistics that illegal immigrants are costing the state billions. Specifically, one said $2 billion and another said $3 billion. I was curious as to where they had taken these numbers, which didn't even agree with each other, since I wasn't able to ask them afterward.

The recent decision in California of a judge to negate the voice of a large majority of the state's voting population should concern every person who hears of it!

Letter: A costly, widening Federal government
Is the Federal Government too large and expensive? Judge for yourself.

The average federal worker makes $71,206 compared with $40,331 in the private sector. Concerning salaries, let's look at the Department of Transportation under Bush: there was one person who earned a salary of $170,000 and today under Obama that same department has 1,690 employees with salaries about $170,000.

Editorial: All that rage good for nothing
The Daily Courier printed a letter to the editor this week from a driver whose car had broken down at a local intersection. The woman's car had stalled, and as her 16-year-old son got out to try and push it out of the way, other drivers, angry at the delay, honked and sped past.

Thankfully, a couple stopped to help this mother and her son move their vehicle, and offered to return with gas or whatever they needed to get back on the road.

I won't go into early events that the Obamas have done against the will of the majority of Americans. However, the most recent deserve a comment.

With 15 million Americans out of work and hurting, Michelle Antoinette, I mean Obama, took 44 of her BFFs to Spain for a holiday.

Letter: A closer look at Proposition 203
Proposition 203, the initiative to legalize medical marijuana in the state of Arizona, is not a homegrown initiative. Prop. 203 is a document written and composed by an organization in Washington D.C. called the Marijuana Policy Project, (MPP). This group of activists claims to be interested in legalizing marijuana for medical use in Arizona.

Editorial: Leaders must work to regain our trust
Five years have passed since Hurricane Katrina eroded people's trust in government at all levels to do its job in a crisis.

As warnings went out that a massive storm was headed toward New Orleans and the surrounding region, nothing happened quickly enough to help the people whose lives would be forever altered by this vengeance of Mother Nature. In fact, they had already been set up by the federal government's failure to maintain 53 levees that catastrophically collapsed against floodwaters.

Letter: Surgical Center rivals big-city medical care
Since I moved here, I have heard from a few residents of their perceived need to go to large, big-name facilities in Phoenix for medical procedures. While I can understand that mindset from a smaller community like ours, recently I had an exceptional experience with our local doctors and their outpatient surgery center.

Column: Alarming news about fine effectiveness

Letter: Only businesses win in immigration battle
The media and our elected representatives completely ignore the source of the immigration problem. It was NAFTA and other neo-liberal trade policies that flooded the Mexican market with cheap, American-subsidized corn and other produce, which made it impossible for Mexican farmers to compete.

Editorial: There's no money to fuel public transit
Welcome to the new position. You've got a lot of eyes looking your way.

Matt Carpenter took on the new post of transit coordinator, which was made possible by a new intergovernmental agreement between Yavapai County and CYMPO. The biggest item on Mr. Carpenter's agenda will be the elusive official public transit system, which over decades has never gotten off the ground in Prescott.

Letter: Logo doesn't do justice to Prescott
Regarding the approved Prescott centennial logo, the design is generic at best. By no means, in my opinion, does it represent what Prescott meant or went through from the womb of what was then the mostly untamed reaches of the New Mexico Territory, to the newly formed Arizona Territory in 1863, through the 50 hard years of struggle, until the birth of the state in 1912.
