Emiley Walter, a senior at Tri-City College Preparatory High School, was crowned champion of the first annual Poetry Out Loud competition on Monday, Jan. 25, before a full assembly of the student body.
Walter recited "We Wear the Mask" by Paul Laurence Dunbar in the preliminary round and moved to the finalist round, reciting "A Perfect Rose" by Dorothy Parker. She was awarded a $100 scholarship by the TCP Humanities Department.
Walter will also be attending the Arizona State Championship competition in March, competing for a $200 scholarship and the opportunity to compete on the national level, which will award $20,000 in scholarships to the national champion.
Grant DeYoung, a freshman at TCP, was awarded runner-up for his recitation of "Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll, and will participate in the state contest if Walter is unable.
