The free tours reveal the history and stories of early Prescott, with a focus on Whiskey Row and other areas of interest around the courthouse plaza.
The primary story deals with the great fire of 1900 that torched most of the downtown structures. Other vignettes highlight historic saloons, hotels, churches, libraries, and, of course, the occasional ghost.
Nine guides, with an accumulated 60 years of experience, take turns leading the tours each Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Oct. 26.
The chamber does not conduct tours on weekends when major events are occurring on the courthouse plaza because of the large crowds along the route.
The tours begin at 10 a.m. in front of the Chamber Visitors' & Information Center at 117 W. Goodwin St. on the south side of the plaza. Participants should plan to arrive about 10 minutes early. Reservations are not mandatory except for groups of eight or more.
Although the duration of each tour varies depending on the guide and the walking abilities of the group, 80 minutes is typical. The route is eight-tenths of a mile of relatively easy walking, and stays within one block of the courthouse.
