A pilot and three passengers died after a Cessna 180 crashed in a remote section of southeastern Yavapai County near Bloody Basin. Yavapai County Sheriff's Office spokesman Scott Reed said the FAA told the Sheriff's Department about the crash after another pilot reported seeing the wreckage near the border with Gila County.

Ehren Falk and Ryan Lanser had the focus, concentration and intelligence required to learn and play the game of chess, and they were only in elementary school. Falk, 8, learned to play chess in pre-school, and won first place in his division in a chess tournament at Abia Judd Elementary School. Falk was in the second grade, and played against fourth and fifth graders in the tournament. The chess club's sponsor said he was an "incredible little chess player."

Governor Fife Symington pulled a hoax when he announced the Department of Public Safety would investigate the reports of UFO sightings over Phoenix. Symington, a Star Trek fan, said he wound not rest until the people of Arizona knew the truth about the extraterrestrial travelers sighted over his state's capital, and that he would also make it his mission to determine the visitor's motives. Later, he laughed, saying reporters were "entirely too serious."

Yavapai County Sheriff Curly Moore said the Board of Supervisors cut budget requests in a closed-door session that was not attended by department heads or Finance Director Jerry Webster. Administrative Assistant Jim Gibson said the supervisors, after completing their meeting, informally discussed the budget requests that county department heads had submitted. He admitted no department heads were notified, as it was an unplanned discussion.

"Darrell L. Christopherson, native of Skull Valley, who was killed Wednesday in Phoenix in a truck-train accident, was Arizona's 201st fatality this year. Christopherson, co-owner of the Gro-Green Fertilizer Co., lived in Skull Valley before moving to Phoenix this spring. The accident occurred when a fast freight train nipped the front of the truck that he was driving. He was the second man killed in the unmarked crossing in a six-month period."

"Under the auspices of the Monday Club and in the club building on Marina Street, an interesting display and demonstration of electric refrigeration machines will be made late this week. The six local dealers handling electric refrigerators at that time will show all the models they carry, having salesman on hand to demonstrate them thoroughly, and in this manner the Prescott housewife who is interested may see all the models under one roof and investigate their relative merits.'

"Coy Carey's alligator is probably not so young and unsophisticated as some supposed, as an authority on alligators says: 'The alligator is long lived, and his growth is of the slowest. An alligator two feet long is at least 15-years-old, while a 12-foot specimen may be anywhere from 75 to 150 years old.' We may need to bow our heads to the most senior member of our community as it crawls on its aged belly."

"The prisoner, Perfecto Espinosa, succeeded in getting his liberty at last. Some party broke into jail a few nights since and released him. He took his shackles with him as a memento of his happy days spent in jail. We begin to think that our jail is a farce on justice. Perhaps it should be renamed as a lodging from which anyone is free to check out without any prior notice, at their whim and leisure."
